Damanhur

Oberto Airaudi Falco, founder and inspiration of Damanhur, passed away on Sunday, June 23, 2013, in the nuclear community of Aval, where he had lived together with other Damanhurian citizens since 1980. According to the organization’s Web site, Damanhur is an ecosociety based on ethical and spiritual values, awarded by an agency of the United Nations as a model for a sustainable future. Founded in 1975, the Federation has about one thousand citizens and extends over 500 hectares (more than 1,235 acres) of territory at the foothills of the Piedmont Alps in Italy. Wikipedia cites a 2007 Daily Mail article that said the group holds a mix of New Age and neopagan beliefs. They gained fame in 1992 through the disclosure of their secret excavation of an extensive underground temple, the Temples of Humankind, which was begun in 1978 under complete secrecy. The Italian authorities ordered construction work to stop because it had been constructed without planning approval, although artwork could continue. Retroactive permission was subsequently granted.
