Brainwashing and the Moonies
Geri-Ann Galanti, Ph.D.
Abstract
This article reports on the experiences and thoughts of an anthropologist who,
under an assumed identity, participated in a 3-day Unification church workshop.
Although the author’s expectation that she would encounter “brainwashing”
techniques was not met, she was, nevertheless, struck by the subtle, yet
powerful, socialization techniques through which the UC members were able to
influence her. She concludes that, to be effect, preventive education in this
area must address the subtleties of the socialization processes that can bring
about major personality changes.
