Lourdes Argüelles, Ph.D.

Lourdes Argüelles, Ph.D. (New York University), is Professor and Researcher of Cultural Studies and Education at Claremont Graduate University, California. A leading voice in human rights for Latino immigrants in the United States, she currently focuses on the fields of interdisciplinary and communities studies and the impact of religious trends on immigrant populations, particularly minority children and women. She holds a post-doctoral certification in clinical psychology and law from the University of York, Canada. Dr. Arguelles has worked extensively as a psychotherapist for political refugees from around the world who have been victims of torture and terrorism. She is on the editorial board of several journals, including Multicultural Social Work, Latino Studies and Revista Académica para el Estudio de las Religiones. Some of her publications include editing the Special Issue “Buddhism in Las Americas” (Journal for S. E. Buddhism, Winter 2001) and three works on educational theory, culture and social justice. Her most recent book, co-authored with Dr. Jorge Erdely, is The New Jihad: Myths and States of Denial (2004).

Es considerada una de las principales defensoras de los derechos humanos de grupos hispanos en los Estados Unidos. Su ámbito de investigación actual se enfoca al ámbito de los estudios interdisciplinarios aplicados a problemas comunitarios, así como a las influencias de los movimientos religiosos sobre las poblaciones inmigrantes, especialmente en minorías étnicas de mujeres y niños. La doctora Argüelles tiene un postdoctorado en Psicología Clínica y Leyes por la Universidad de York, Canadá, y ha trabajado extensamente como psicoterapeuta con refugiados políticos de muchos países que han sido victimas de tortura y terrorismo. Es miembro de varios comités editoriales en revistas especializadas, entre ellas, Multicultural Social Work, Latino Studies y Revista Académica para el Estudio de las Religiones. En 2001 fue Editora del numero especial “Buddhism in Las Americas” (Journal for S.E Buddhism, Winter 2001), así como de tres publicaciones sobre teoría educativa, cultura y justicia social.
