Elio Masferrer, Ph.D.

Elio Masferrer, Ph.D., is Professor and Researcher at the National School of Anthropology and History in Mexico City. He pursued his studies in Anthropology in Argentina, Peru, and Mexico. Currently, he is the President of the Latin American Association for the Study of Religions (ALER). From 1979 to 1984 he held the post of Associate Researcher at the Instituto Indigenista Interamericano, a think-tank of the Organization of American Estates (OAS). Dr. Masferrer wrote his Ph.D dissertation specializing in Religion and Politics, under renowned French scholar and social scientist, Marion Aubrée. As a staff member of the Ethnological Studies Department, he has conducted a vast amount of field research on popular religiosity, ethnic conflicts, State-Church relations, and contemporary religious movements. He has authored and edited numerous specialized books and technical papers on such topics and is currently on the editorial board of various scientific journals and international encyclopedias.

Elio Masferrer, Ph.D., es Profesor-Investigador Titular de la Escuela Nacional de Antropología e Historia en la Ciudad de México. Presidente de la Asociación Latinoamericana para el Estudio de las Religiones, realizó sus estudios como Antropólogo e Historiador en Argentina, Perú y México. En el período de 1979-1984, ocupó el cargo de Investigador Asociado del Instituto Indigenista Interamericano, organismo especializado de la Organización de Estados Americanos (OEA). Es Doctor en Antropología por la ENAH, en la cual se especializo en política y religión escribiendo su disertación bajo la dirección de la renombrada científica social francesa, Marion Aubrée. Como investigador del Departamento de Etnología de la misma institución, el Dr. Masferrer ha realizado una amplia gama de estudios de campo sobre religiosidad popular, conflictos étnicos, relaciones Iglesia-Estado y movimientos religiosos contemporáneos. Es autor y editor de varios libros y artículos especializados sobre estos temas y funge actualmente en el comité editorial y ejecutivo de distintas revistas científicas y enciclopedias internacionales.
